How Do Taxpayers Respond to Public Disclosure and Social Recognition Programs? Evidence from Pakistan

Abstract We examine two Pakistani programs to see if the public disclosure of tax information and social recognition top taxpayers promotes compliance. Pakistan began revealing income paid by all in 2012. Simultaneously, another program recognizing rewarding 100 tax- paying corporations, partnerships, self-employed individuals, wage earners. find that caused an increase 9 log points 17 payments agents exposed program. Our results suggest such can be important policy levers mobilize additional resources.
